Spectacular textile art at Liverpool Cathedral Andrew Parkinson <andrewparkinson.456@gmail.com> Spectacular textile art at Liverpool Cathedral – a 44 panel odyssey with 25 million stitches! ‘Threads through the Bible ’ is an astonishing textile art exhibition showing from 16th January to 3rd March at Liverpool Anglican Cathedral. If you’re interested in the visual arts, textile art or sewing, don’t miss it! This is a great opportunity to enjoy a wonderful exhibition in a wonderful location. It may be a bit of a journey for some, but it will be right up their street for many … The show consists of 44 beautiful silk panels re-imagining key sections in the Bible. They’re huge – nearly 3m high – and if they were put side by side they would stretch 100 metres. It’s one of the largest textile art projects, ever. It has taken artist Jacqui Parkinson ten years to complete - and 25 million stitches. You’ll find the huge scale, vibrant colours, dramatic and complex designs truly breath-taking. Many Arts Society members saw the exhibition’s first part, ‘Threads through Creation’, when it toured 2021-2024 – and loved it! CHRISTMAS SHOW AND TELL NOVEMBER 2024 This was again a most enjoyable afternoon as we learnt interesting facts and saw wonderful items. There were Christmas decorations which included a selection of beautiful hand crafted items as well as ceramic snow babies and a copy of Biltmore House. Silver items included a plate from Russia and an Arts and Crafts dish. There was also beaded African jewellery, first day covers, art work, middle eastern artefacts, sculpture, books, a petrified tree and a violin. Whilst all these items were wonderful to view their owners had stories to tell about their acquisition and meaning to them which made them all the more fascinating. Irene provided us with tea and seasonal goodies so there was time for a chat. Thanks to Carol for organising the afternoon and to Irene for organising the refreshments. |

| Tiffany Glass with Brian Healey |
| Brian Healey |
Visit to See Tiffany Glass with Brian Healey as Guide Thursday, June 27th 2024 £30 Members and friends welcome All arrangements for this trip are now confirmed.
The main pick-up point for the trip will be at Craig y Don Centre but if there are participants who wish to board at Penmaenmawr or Y Felinheli this can be arranged. After leaving Crai y Don we will make our way for a visit first to the Whitaker Museum and Art Gallery at Rawtenstall. There are a number of collections here including 189 oil paintings in its permanent collection illustrating the wealth of Rossendale during the industrial revolution of the 19th century. There are a substantial amount of good-quality portraits and a fine collection of 19th century genre paintings as well as a contemporary art collection. There is the opportunity to have lunch here either in the café or you may prefer a picnic in the surrounding Park. A 15 minute journey then takes us to the Haworth Gallery in Accrington where we will meet up with Brian Healey who will act as our guide as we view the three rooms of the Tiffany Glass Exhibition, the greatest public exhibition of this glass outside the USA. There are also further galleries to explore, a shop and a café.
Those of you who heard Brian's presentation at the April meeting will be aware how knowledgeable and enthusiastic he is about Tiffany glass. Brian is offering his services especially for us as he does not usually act as a guide but he wanted to welcome us to his home area. A fantastic opportunity to see this exhibition of Tiffany glass in the company of such an expert.
Time is short to ensure that we will have enough participants for this trip so there are two ways to book and pay. 1. See Carol and team at the May meeting to pay with card, cheque or cash. Cheques payable to 'The Arts Society Llandudno' please 2. Make a BACS transfer to cover the cost of the number of people you wish to register and then email Carol so she knows to add your name/names to the list of participants. Please pay before emailing Carol to avoid any confusion. BACS Details Account name “The Arts Society Llandudno”, Sort Code: 53-70-33, Account No: 76548813
Please mark your payment Tiffany and your own name so that the Treasurer can keep the accounts in order Carol's Email carolwreglesworth@gmail.com I am going to use method 2 to reduce queueing at the meeting and to secure a place. This trip will probably be very popular. Even though I will have paid and informed Carol and so have secured a place I will still then need to complete a form. Since the tragic death of the scout on the Great Orme all organisations have been advised to tighten up on arrangements so as to keep participants safe and we feel we should also now be vigilant with safeguarding. The form will ask you to give your own mobile 'phone number and details of someone who can be contacted on your behalf in case of an emergency.
This should be an excellent day out and hopefully the instructions above to join are clear and not too bossy! Contact me please if you have any concerns.
All good wishes, Jacqueline Chair |

| Visit to Saltaire |
|
Visit to Saltaire Thursday April 18 2024 £25 per person UNESCO: "Saltaire, West Yorkshire, is a complete and well-preserved industrial village of the second half of the 19th century. Its textile mills, public buildings and workers' housing are built in a harmonious style of high architectural standards and the urban plan survives intact, giving a vivid impression of Victorian philanthropic paternalism." In Salts Mill there is - 3rd Floor Gallery - a stunning show, 'The Arrival of Spring' by David Hockney, is open on the third floor. This set of original works were drawn by David on his iPad in 2011, and printed at an incredible scale. The 1853 Gallery - named after the year that the mill opened - is unique. It displays a large number of David Hockney's paintings, etchings, and drawings. People and Process tells the story of the Mill through objects great and small: machinery, clothing, art - even a precious plate from the lavish opening banquet of 1853, to which Sir Titus Salt invited 2,440 workers and 1,310 guests. Sir Titus’s original boardroom furniture is on display, and a film about the history of the Mill and Village plays in an adjoining room. |

| St David's Hospice Art Therapist Taalk and " Show an Tell " event |
|
Study Afternoon and Tea Wednesday February 28th 2024 at 2.00pm
Susie, the Art Therapist from St David's Hospice told us about her work and how she usthe used the £250 we recently donated. Members then introduced us to interesting objects, and gave short chat about the item. There of course was tea and cake midway through the afternoon. Show and Tell Tea Event The cornucopia of curiosities that members brought to show and tell about were fascinating. They covered every facet of the arts - music, literature, painting, drawing and sculpture, silver, ceramics and glassware, and textiles. A signed Ralph Vaughan Williams score, a craftsman made rosewood recorder, an amish quilt, rag rug, Hungarian wedding dress, a rare William Morris book with exquisite cover, a rare coronation mug, Minton dish, Mdina vase, silver horse headdress, and wonderful boats. Pictures in watercolour, pencil drawings, etchings, and a Parian ware sculpture. It was amazing to see the contents of bags and baskets. Whilst the objects were beautiful it was the stories that people told about them that made the afternoon; how they obtained these objects, what they meant to the owner and the history behind them. If proof was needed objects do not have to have monetary value for us to cherish them and to experience joy in sharing them with others.. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed the afternoon and as always the refreshment team provided a delicious tea. Certainly there was enthusiasm for another such event and who knows what we might see! |

| Bill Gribble |
Study Afternoon Friday, May 19th 2023 2.00 p.m. to 4.30 p.m. Craig y Don Community Centre From Concept to Completion Bill Gribble Local Artist £20 per person Bill Gribble, a local artist, will demonstrate how a painting emerges ‘From Concept to Completion’. This should be fascinating as we see an artist at work and are helped to understand the process of painting. There will, of course, be tea midway in the afternoon! We are using the Craig y Don Centre for this venture as there is easy parking and they have been so helpful to us in organising our various activities. Bill Gribble has lived and worked in North Wales for many years. He was inspired by an Aunt when very young to develop and take part in creative and artistic activities. By the age of sixteen, he was a founder member of the Midlands Art Centre, MAC, in Birmingham. Whilst there he was employed by John Blundell, international puppet master and sculptor for the children’s television programmes Thunderbirds, Stingray and Pob. Bill undertook a three year teaching course in Fine Art at Alsager College, Manchester Metropolitan University, progressing into a teaching career in Art, Craft and Design. Although he is currently best known for attempting to capture the power and light of the water around the Welsh coastline in oil paint, he also enjoys portraying all environments in a range of mediums. Do please come along as this should prove to be an interesting afternoon and it is positive that we are supporting a local artist. |

| Romping with the Georgians |
| David Harper |
On 22 June we had a very entertaining afternoon with David Harper, when there was much ‘Romping with the Georgians’. David’s show takes a funny look at life during the period from 1714 to 1830 – a time in Britain of growth, discoveries and inventions and recalled an age of lavish and dangerous fashions, terrible jobs, strange events and outrageous characters. This was a very funny, enjoyable afternoon and those Georgians will never look the same to us again! Afternoon tea and cakes were served which added to the general afternoon entertainment. |

| Visit to Powis Castle |
|
On the 17th May 2022 at last, we were able to enjoy a trip again after all the disruption of the pandemic. We chose as our first visit Powys Castle and Gardens. 32 of us set off on a slightly overcast but promising day. The medieval fortress rises above the spectacular gardens. The yew hedges are something to behold. We saw gardeners planting for the spring and summer amidst the wonderful herbaceous borders, there was not a weed insight. The castle is full of treasures, including sculptures, textiles, paintings, furniture and rare objects. Some of us did admire the large Pietre dure table, which a Herbert family legend suggests was a gift from the Pope. It features a marble top inlaid with lapis lazuli and semi-precious stones. Look carefully at the design to see crickets, snails, birds and other little creatures. We spread ourselves around the two tearooms for lunch, tea and cake. Taking advantage of the kind weather, by sitting outside in the courtyards and admiring the peacock displays. After which we were off to the shop to buy a memory of the day. |

| Hans Christian Anderson – Wit, Artist, Traveller |
| Karin Fernald |
A Study Day with The Arts Society Llandudno Wednesday June 5th. Colleg Llandrillo, Rhos-on-Sea LL28 4HZ Karin Fernald Karin Fernald, actor, writer and speaker, has a high reputation as a solo performer on arts and literary subjects. She researches and writes her own material to create a spell-binding recreation of a character and a historical period. She also works with musicians and performers to combine words and music. She has appeared at festivals all over England; on tour in Japan, Australia and Europe, and at the University of Cape Town Summer School. London venues include the National Portrait Gallery, the Foundling Museum, Dr.Johnson’s House and the Hurlingham Club. Karin trained as an actor at RADA and worked in theatre, TV and radio. She has a distinguished theatrical background including appearing at London’s Haymarket theatre with Sir Ralph Richardson, and at the Savoy Theatre opposite Robert Morley in his hit comedy A Ghost on Tiptoe. For more information see www.karinfernald.com Hans Christian Anderson As a child, Hans Andersen made puppet costumes, taught by his cobbler father. Later in life he sketched, though he never had lessons. He produced collages which anticipate early 20th century modernism and his papercuts of swans, ballet dancers, court ladies, dancing millers, storks, the sandman and other folklore figures, are exquisite and magical. He was a sharp observer of life in Copenhagen, saying of his stories “Every character is taken from life; I know and have known them all.” He was a keen traveller over much of Europe and part of Asia; “Life is to fly with railway flight around the earth – we’re long enough underneath it!” And, influenced by his friend, scientist H.C. Orsted, he was thrilled by the scientific discoveries of his day, even putting them into some of his 156 published stories. With slides of Andersen’s sketches, papercuts and collages, and illustrations of his stories by artists from all over the world, including Arthur Rackham, Edmond Dulac, Lars Bo and Kai Nielsen, and with paintings by Christen Kobke and other Danish artists from Andersen’s day, Karin will enlarge further on all of the above. Format of the Day 9.30 Coffee or tea 10.00 – 11pm Lecture 1 This is mainly biographical, based on what Andersen tells us about his life and on a few of the literary influences upon him. Together with a couple of shorter stories, a little Danish history, paintings by Andersen's contemporary Golden Age artists such as Christen Kobke, and illustrations to Andersen's stories by artists from different countries. Coffee / Tea 11.15 – 12.15 Lecture 2 This focusses mainly on some lesser-known stories (he wrote 156 in all) and on the origins of some others, including THE EMPEROR'S NEW CLOTHES and LITTLE IDA'S FLOWERS, his first story based on real life. And it touches on the origins of and popularity of the fairy tale in l9th century Europe, dating from l7th century Versailles. 12.15 – 2pm – Lunch 2pm to 3pm Lecture 3 This is mainly on Andersen as a visual artist and his many beautiful and elaborate papercuts and weird collages. Also, on his idiosyncratic religious sense; his love of nature and his flower and plant arrangements for the table, which have been recreated. Also included are a few poems of his set to music by later Scandinavian composers, including Grieg and Nielsen. The cost for the day including a two-course lunch is £32 For any further information either ring me on 101758 461166 or email robertsjackie@outlook.com Address: Ty’r Bont, Golf Road, Pwllheli LL53 5PR Feedback on the Study Day from attendees:- 1) Just to say thank you for the study day and to congratulate you on the fact that it went so well. All the facilities were good, with the lecture room etc. close to the restaurant. The meal and service were fine. In fact, the time allowed for lunch was very generous. I expect you heard several of us commenting on the fact that it was rather hard to cut the roast beef with the knives provided - steak knives would have been better, especially since it was rare. Thanks once again for sorting out my booking problem so quickly and efficiently. Anyta Jawzi 2) Thank you , Jackie for giving us such a wonderful speaker. The venue was very scenic and convenient. Enjoy the summer. Sally Clements 3) Thank you so much for organising today's Study Day. It was all MOST enjoyable! Splendid speaker and excellent meal. Diana. Closer to home, he has presented events at the Barbican, St John’s Smith Square, and the Royal Festival Hall on The Beethoven String Quartets, Mozart Operas, Vermeer’s Music Lesson, The Twelve Days of Christmas, The Golden Age of Vienna, and 18th Century Venetian Art and Music. On the radio, his appearances have included Classic FM’s Susanna Simons’ Show, Radio 3’s In Tune, Radio 4’s Arts Programme, and Midweek with Libby Purves. Paintings Inspired by Music It has long been acknowledged that the worlds of the visual and aural arts link with extraordinary power when one medium inspires the other. This study day, which spans over 600 years of the arts, analyses and discusses a range of related works, bringing together the music of Martinu with the frescoes of Piero della Francesca, Botticelli’s Birth of Venus with Respighi’s Trittico botticelliano, Böcklin’s Isle of the Dead with Rachmaninoff’s symphonic poem, and Piet Mondrian’s Broadway Boogie Woogie with the piano playing of Albert Ammons. The study day is presented with digital images, video, recorded music and live examples sung and played at the piano. For more information see www.petermedhurst.com Format of the Day 10.15-11.15 After a brief introduction to the subject of ‘music inspired by paintings’, three paintings are discussed that have produced direct musical responses in famous composers. The couplings are these: Music: S Rachmaninov – Isle of the Dead, tone poem for orchestra (1908) Painting: A Böcklin – Isle of the Dead (5 known versions of the painting 1880-6)
Music: O Respighi – Trittico Botticelliano (1927) Paintings: S Botticelli – La Primavera (1482), Adoration of the Magi (1475), The Birth of Venus (1486)
Coffee / Tea 11.45-1.00 The theme of music drawing inspiration from identifiable paintings continues with the following material: Music: B Martinu – The Frescoes of Piero della Francesca (1955) Painting: Piero della Francesca – Frescoes in Arezzo, Italy of The History of the True Cross (before 1466)
Music: F Liszt – Hunnenschlacht, tone poem for orchestra (1857) Painting: W von Kaulbach – Hunnenschlacht (c1850)
Half way through this second session, the theme is reversed and before the lunch break, the subject of ‘paintings inspired by music’ is introduced. Peter Medhurst plays John Field’s Nocturne No 5 and Chopin’s Nocturne in Em Op 72 No 1 on the piano and discusses the use of the word ‘nocturne’ in the works of James Whistler. 1.00-2.30 – Lunch 2.30-3.45 The last session of the day explores the wealth of 19th and 20th century paintings that connect with specific musical works and musical genres. The following connections are made: Painting: M von Schwind – Symphony (1852) Music: L van Beethoven – Fantasia in C for Piano, Soloists, Chorus and Orchestra (1808)
Painting: P Mondrian – Broadway Boogie Woogie(1942-3) Music: Selection of Boogie Woogie music from the late 1930s and early 1940s(Image: Mondrian - Broadway Boogie Woogie- courtesy of Wikimedia Commons)

A Study Day with The Arts Society Llandudno Held at Tre-Ysgawen Hall, Anglesey LL77 7UR Nicola Moorby is an independent art historian specialising in British art of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. She studied at the University of York and Birkbeck College, London. Formerly a curator at Tate Britain she has curated a number of exhibitions and has published widely on J.M.W. This Special Interest Day sets them head-to-head and examines their differences, their similarities, their battles and their shared triumphs. But who will ultimately be crowned star painter? As well as giving an overview of Turner and Constable, the subject provides an enjoyable overview of the British art world during the nineteenth century.
